Welcome

"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together"

George Elliot

Welcome. My name is Bridget and I am the principal Clinical Psychologist at Holistic Psychology Brisbane. I take a holistic approach to mental health. This  means that in addition to using psychological treatments, I work with my clients to promote change in a range of domains that have also been shown to influence mental health. These domains are:

Diet and Nutrition

Lifestyle and Environment

Biological and Medical

Social and Spiritual

Psychology and Coping Skills

Research has shown that only 30% of adults will experience substantial benefits from psychological therapy or medication, and 30% will experience moderate benefit, meaning that 40% of adults struggling with anxiety or poor mood do not benefit from the two most commonly used forms of intervention for mental health problems. A growing body of research is increasingly providing us with a range of evidenced-based interventions from each of these five domains.  That is, there are specific, often quite small, changes that have been shown by research to create improvements in mental health, particularly with regard to low mood and anxiety.

This form of intervention is called Personalised Integrative Therapy, or PI Therapy, and has been  developed by Dr. Adrian Lopresti. Dr. Lopresti drew on extensive research into interventions in these domains to develop a collection of techniques that together create positive change in mental health. There are four main principles in PI Therapy.

1) PI Therapy is in essence multi-targeted. That is, at Holistic Psychology Brisbane, instead of focusing on only one area (for example, using medication or psychological therapy), many areas are addressed. It is often easier and less overwhelming for people to achieve relatively small changes in several domains, and these small incremental changes can have a cumulative positive effect.

2) PI Therapy is a highly personalised form of intervention. At Holistic Psychology Brisbane we use quite detailed assessments to develop a unique treatment plan for each person, including areas to target and the intensity of change that is indicated. We also consider each person's motivation and skills for change,  and work on any identified change barriers.

3) At Holistic Psychology Brisbane we treat causes rather than symptoms. A diagnosis such as depression or anxiety is not particularly helpful from this perspective, as it does not help us identify the specific set of unique causes of each person's  poor mental health. PI Therapy aims to identify and treat causes.

4) PI Therapy involves various levels of intensity of intervention. This means that if a person's mental health is not improving sufficiently with some foundation interventions such as dietary changes and other straight forward lifestyle changes we increase the intensity of the interventions in certain domains. In some cases other professionals with more specialised knowledge may be consulted, for example exercise physiologists or dietitians.

I am very excited to bring PI Therapy to my practice. I believe this integrative approach holds the keys to improve the mental health of many of my clients, particularly those suffering from depression and anxiety, and those for whom traditional psychological therapies and/or pharmacological approaches have been largely unsuccessful.

I invite you to explore the rest of the website as I have included more detailed information about holistic approaches to treatment, and the five domains involved in PI Therapy.

If you are interested in learning more about how PI Therapy can help your journey to mental and physical well being please consider getting in touch to make an appointment with me. I look forward to hearing from you.
