Why PI Therapy?

According to data gathered by the Black Dog Institute, in any one year 20% of Australians will experience a mental health problem and in terms of lifetime incidence 1 in 7 Australians will experience depression.

Depression is the third largest contributor to disease burden in Australia and world wide. The most common treatments for anxiety and depression are psychological therapy and medication. These two forms of treatment are equally effective. But, only 30% of people gain substantial benefit from either and 30% gain only moderate benefit. This leaves 40% of people with mental health difficulties gaining no benefit from the two most common treatment approaches.

In addition, emerging research shows that pharmacological and psychological interventions have poorer outcomes today than indicated by studies conducted in previous decades. What could explain this? It may be that depression and anxiety rates are increasing in response to the many lifestyle changes occurring in the general public over recent decades. These include changes in nutrition, activity levels, degree of social engagement, time outdoors, and other environmental factors. Personalised Integrative Therapy (PI Therapy) uses a range of evidence-based strategies to create positive mental health, addressing lifestyle factors as well as psychological coping styles.

PI Therapy offers evidence-based interventions for who wish to embrace a holistic approach to enhancing their mental health. It is also likely to be particularly useful for people who have experienced low or no response to either pharmacological  and traditional psychological interventions, as well as those who experience significant side effects to medication. A common side effect of many of the PI Therapy interventions aimed at improving mental health is in fact  improved physical health and well-being!
